We have a requirement for a web scraper to be written in PHP or Python. The database will be interfaced with our existing web software. The scraper is to be able to machine-read the product pages and prices from online retail websites in New Zealand, specifically Computer part retailers. Their prices will be listed in our software, directing them potential customers.
The scraper requirements are as follows:
- The scraper will initially be required to scrape the attached 120 stores.
- Stores are to be kept in a stores table (mysql structure supplied).
- Products that are read by the scraper are to be kept in a store_products table (mysql structure supplied).
- Stores will be scraped daily by the scraper, updating products when found, or adding them if they are new products. The Robots.txt rules must be followed for the store.
- Product items that are found for a store should be unique (no duplicates).
- The 120 stores should be able to be scraped and update the store_products table in 9 hours or less.
- The ability to exclude URLs or keywords of products is required via mysql table of rules.
- In the future, extra stores can be added to the scraper. Future requirements will require scaling to 300+ stores.
- Daily output when the scraper has scraped all stores, with stats on the results from each stores scraping for the day (to be saved as a log file on the server).
- As we do not require any administration pages to be built, Delivered code must be structured and commented very well for future modifications.

I’m not a tech head, so give me a break if the description is not optimal, but on the content part of the homepage of my BigCommerce website (see work in progress on dah.mybigcommerce.com) I wish to create a search engine like on adobe.com (upper right hand corner). Upon entering the first letters/numbers it needs to provide suggestions from the database (including links to the result).

No idea how it’s done, but someone told me it’s flash + javascript with a SQL database. It does not need to search within the website, but within a database I can control (preferrably through ftp).

So far (apparently) easy, but here comes the ‘tricky’ part; on the homepage I need two search boxes. Search box 1 will search on:
a) postcode, which will have to link to a page with all stores within that postcode area;
b) suburb/city, which will have to show all suburbs/cities with that name + postcode to select from (because of the same suburb/city possibility in the different Australian states) and then upon click link to a page with all stores within that suburb/city.

Once on the selected postcode or suburb/city page, the visitor will (besides the alphabetical store list) see another search box on the top to enter the delivery street name + number (without suffix, level, etc; just the streetnumber) in order to determine which stores in the database fall within a 5km delivery radius from that specific street address (possibly determined by longitude/latitude) and display the alphabetical result.

Still with me? Ok, similar thing goes for search box number 2 on the homepage, the product/service search box. Once a product/service is selected, the visitor goes to a page with a postcode or suburb/city search box like in box 1 searching for stores within that area that provide that specific product/service and displays the store list resultpage with on top a search box for delivery street + number as mentioned before to specify the stores within a 5km radius that deliver the selected product/service to that specific address.

In the final street radius result page there should be an option for me to add stores to the result in the database (stores that deliver to any address regardless of distance).

I would be curious, and open, to any suggestions that you may have to make the site more professional, and “shopper friendly.” I am currently also trying to pitch Stores, so I would want to be as appealing as possible, and have it be a great “selling tool.” (Also, possibly adding a “Wholesale” Button for Stores to click on with a PDF with all the products/wholesale pricing to make it easier for them to view.)

As far as products on the Home page… I would change that to only have the Pillowcases and the Mugs as products available at this time.

I currently have one website using the Stores On Line platform and ready to create a second site on the same platform. I am hoping to find someone who is familiar with building and maintaining sites in the Stores On Line back office to avoid the time necessary to train you in this format. It is a pretty user friendly format, so if you are the right person and not familiar with the platform, then it should not take too long to teach you the ropes. You will have to spend your time learning the ins and outs though.
Our first project will be to provide you some PDF images or InDesign files to create 4 or 5 pages of content. Stores On Line has templates we can use, but we will also want to keep a standard look on all pages. Our graphics will be general guidelines and you will have the flexibility to adjust as long as we approve and it looks nice.
We are not exactly sure of how many pages are needed yet, but are looking at about 6 to begin with. Content will be included in the PDF or InDesign files. Basic outline of the site is this:

Need an ecommerce site that uses WordPress with the wp-ecommerce plugin as the platform. Will have a main site with approximately 500 products broken into categories. Each product should have the ability to have attributes of quantity, color, and size that can be selected from the dropdowns. See http://americanpromo.com/ as an example.
Quote should include the loading in of the inventory and creating the products and categories within wp-ecommerce.
In addition, need the ability to have ‘company stores’ that will be password protected and contain a subset of the inventory of the ‘main store’ described above. These ‘company stores’ will be a template that allows new stores to be added quickly, only needing to brand them with their corporate colors & logo, and select which inventory is needed on a per-store basis. Company stores will also have the ability to request a company logo on the merchandise, so logo style/color, and logo placement will be additional fields when selecting merchandise.
The implementation of the ‘company stores’ does not have to be part of the ‘main store’…they can be under a different site, such as a ‘company store site’ which they may access by going to something like www.companystore.com/mystore or mystore.companystore.com. Not sure if WPMU might be more applicable to this or not. So, this could be 2 projects if the ‘company stores’ are broken off by themselves.

I have a website where I want to show approx 10-15 stores on a Google map.

The functionality is as follows.

User will click on store locator page which will show the map and the store location icons. Single custom icon required for stores locations icon – this will be based on existing logo.

Left of map will just be text telling user what to do. May also list the stores name/location (town).

User can hover over store icon on map to see summary details (see attached screenshot).

If user clicks on store icon – the map will zoom into theat location. Also the store details (name/address/contactdetails/opening times) will be displayed on the left of the map. There will be a link to Get Directions and to Send Enquiry to store on the left hand side. The map pop-up will also have a “Get diredions link” which when clicked will allow user to enter town/postcode (again see screenshot).

I have also included a Tiny URL in screenshot for a website which has a lot of the above features – so you can see how they function.

The system does not need to be database driven – as the stores will be defined once. As long as it is easy to update the store information. Please let me know what you intend to use i.e. PHP/MySQL/Ajax – PHP/files

With the PRESS/ARTICLES, I would need them to be more VIEWER-freindly, once clicked on. I would also like to add a “Store Locator” button, and list the stores that currently carry my products, a “Follow me on Facebook” button, etc…

I installed the ‘Automatic stores generation’ extension for the Multi-Stores add-on of OsCommerce. http://addons.oscommerce.com/info/1730

Everything seems to work fine, except.. the copied stores are giving this 403 error with every filename:

“Forbidden

You don’t have permission to access /new-store-dir/ on this server.”

The filenames are soft links to the ‘master store’ “minimal”.

Adding ‘Options +FollowSymLinks’ to .htaccess had no effect. The server owners said they had this option enabled as well.

So maybe I’m missing an obvious thing, I’m not an expert in this field.

Please only apply if you have experience with these kinds of things, I can’t use too much experimentation. In a pm, let me know why I should let you do this.
