Penny Black – Web 2.0 Design

December 5th, 2009

A web designer is needed to design a highly customized e-commerce RIA solution for a new client.

Our client wants a online Web 2.0 e-commerce site develop in Microsoft’s Silverlight. Seeing that we are coders, and not designers, we have decided to outsource the assistance of a professional designer.

Project Description:
My client, who is an avid stamp-collector, sees Penny Black as his chance to showcase his personal stamp collection online and provide potential buyers the opportunity to browse and purchase items from his collection. Ideally the site should have a classic look and feel to it, think the Post-Office of the late 1800′s and early 1900′s. Clean, simple and elegant.

The site’s basic requirements are as follows, feel free to comment and suggest enhancements. (The site might be extended in the future)
1. Home and welcoming page
2. About Penny Black (client vision, etc)
3. Contact us
4. Shopping cart (always visible)
5. Checkout (visible when items are in cart)
6. Top items (always visible)
7. Inventory List – (with categories, filters, and sort by…)
8. Search functionality
9. User Registration

Bear in mind that silverlight is ideal for animation, pixel effects and transitions, suggestions in this regard is also welcome (think items that grow on mouseover, carousel controls, animating/flipping cards, magnifying glass on stamp image, drag and drop functionality, etc, etc).

Resources like logos, colours, shapes, etc needs to be re-usable in Silverlight, and therefore these deliverables needs to be in *.svg, or hopefully even *.xaml, format.

Applications to develop these formats include the following, in order of preference:
1. Microsoft Expression Design – XAML as Native Format
2. Inkscape – *.SVG as native Format, can be exported to XAML.
3. Adobe Illustrator – *.AI, can be converted to SVG or XAML, some advanced formatting might however be lost. Seeing that we havent converted from this format before it would be nice to receive advise in this regard.

See this as an opportunity to become really creative – whatever you can envision as a designer, we as coders can deliver. We are looking to build long-term relationships with skilled designers, therefore this should be seen as a pilot project, and an opportunity to impress.
