Seo Help Needed.

I’m running an article directory and would like to rank for 2 keyword phrases:
article directory (currently on page 5-6)
free articles (currently on page 15-25)
I want to rank on the first page of Google for these phrases. In the past I ranked #1 for the term ‘article directory’. Then from one day to another I lost rankings.
Need someone who has done this before using white hat techniques. Show examples of SEO work.
