Htaccess/htpasswd Needed

I have a simple Joomla! site for a client who wants only certain people to be able to view the site. Before any of the site content appears, I want the viewer to login with a user name and password (The user name and PW will be the same for everybody). I have the .htpasswd and .htaccess files with the generated codes, but am not having success.
