Joomla Index-page Design Adapt

On an Joomla 1.5 website with custom template I need following changes:
Change width from 1024 to 1000 pixels.
Adapt design like on design-draft (jpg), which concerns the middle part.
Insert new pic on top (will be delivered).
Basic design will remain same (menu, top)
