Stop Spam On Forum

I am using an older PHPBB and am getting a lot of spam. I need someone to either update the file, plus create ways to stop the spam or transfer this forum to a new platform that will help stop spam. I realize people can still manually register and post spam, but it just seems like so much spam is getting on the boards that it is a computer generated spam.
